What is skin cancer?

  • Skin cancer occurs when skin cells are damage due to overexposure of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
  • There are 3 types of skin cancer:
    • Basal Cell Carcinoma​
    • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
    • Melanoma (most dangerous)
  • Causes of skin cancer:
    • Sunburn - causes 95% of all melanomas​
    • Tanning
    • Solariums

  • Skin cancer checks using state of the art Mole Max II machine.

  • Biopsy procedures can be performed in the practice if required.  Please notify reception if that is the case so that an appointment of appropriate length can be booked. 

  • What can you do? Become familiar with your skin so you are aware of any changes.  If you notice any crusty, non-healing sores, small lumps that are red, pale or pearly in colour or new spots, freckles or any moles changing in colour, thickness or shape book in for an appointment.  Click here to download the Cancer Council Australia Skin Cancer Identification Poster,

Skin Cancer in Australia
  • Approximately 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time there are 70.
  • More than 750,000 people are treated for non-melanoma skin cancers in Australia each year
  • Melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australian women and the fourth most common cancer in men.  It is the most common cancer in Australians aged 15-44 years
  • Skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers annually.
